Rosary Making

Making Rosaries is a great hobby and a great apostolate. It can truly be a rewarding experience once you have tried it.

There are two main kinds of Rosary you can make, cord rosary and wire rosary.

Cord Rosaries

These are quick and easy to make. The only skill to learn is how to form the knots. There are no expensive tools needed.

Wire Rosaries

Wire Rosaries are generally stronger and of higher quality.

Machine made eye-pins and chain are also available for making chain rosaries. This is considered an easier and time saving method of making rosaries.

How to make a Rosary using Eye-pins

To make a chain rosary you will need the following materials:

1.        a cross/crucifix
2.        a center
3.       Beads (59 pcs. of the same sizes and color or you may want to style it with 53 pcs. of the same sizes and color and 6 pcs. in other color or sizes).

            Example:     53 pcs. 8mm beads
                                    6 pcs. 10mm beads

4.        Eye-pins (59 pcs.)
5.        Chain
6.        Jump rings
7.        Tools (round nose pliers, wire cutters).

You can use the longer eye-pins for smaller beads, however you may need to trim the eye-pin with wire cutters which could slow your work down.

The pictures below shows you the process step by step:

Round nose pliers help you shape the eye-pin. Remember to hook the next eye-pin or chain onto your eye-pin before you fully close the loop.

Jump rings are used to attach the center and the crucifix to your rosary. It can be opened and separated from one another. To open a jump ring, do not pull it apart, but rather move one side up and one side down to create the space and to attach the chain/center and crucifix. Close it by moving the opening back to the centre position.

The size of your jump ring would depend on the size of your rosary and therefore the beads. I find 5-6mm jump rings are a good size for smaller rosaries as well as larger and should be suitable for a rosary with beads between 4mm and 10mm.

Cable chain is the easiest chain to work for rosary beads. This is because it resists tangling due to its design and strength. You can get cable chain with oval or round links and both are suitable for rosary beads.

Life is full of especial occasions, birth, baptism, first communion, confirmation, graduation, birthdays and anniversary. A self-made Rosary can be a loving gift to a special one.
